Philippine government attorney fatally shot in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA — A government attorney for the Philippines was fatally shot in an Uber while visiting Philadelphia, officials said Sunday.

John Albert Laylo was heading to Philadelphia International Airport with his mother to board a flight and was stopped in the Uber at a red light near the University of Pennsylvania around 4:10 a.m. Saturday, officials said.

Several rounds were fired into the Uber from a black car behind it, police said. The black car then pulled up alongside the Uber and fired several more rounds into it, police said in a news release.

Laylo was shot in the back of the head and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead Sunday, police said.

No one was arrested, and no weapon has been found, police said. Authorities did not offer a suspected motive or say whether Laylo, his mother or the Uber driver were intentionally targeted. Homicide detectives are investigating and are looking for surveillance video.

The consulate general of the Philippines said the victim was an attorney for its government, Philadelphia’s KYW-TV reported.

An attorney for the Philippines government was fatally shot in Philadelphia this weekend while in an Uber on the way to the airport, as investigators still haven’t disclosed a motive as of Monday morning. 

John Albert Laylo, an attorney for the government of the Philippines, and his mother were headed to Philadelphia International Airport to board a flight early Saturday when police say an unidentified suspect in a black car fired several rounds around 4:10 a.m. into their Uber at a red light near the University of Pennsylvania. 

Laylo was shot in the back of the head and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead Sunday morning, police said. No arrests have been announced as of early Monday. 

“Too many guns. Doesn’t matter if it’s a tourist from the Philippines or one of our native-born Philadelphians, there are too many damn guns in Pennsylvania and Philadelphia,” Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, a Democrat, said Sunday, according to WPVI-TV.

Attorney from Philippines killed in ‘random’ shooting in Philadelphia

June 20 (UPI) — A government attorney for the Philippines was shot and killed while traveling in an Uber to the Philadelphia airport, authorities and officials said.

Elmer Cato, the consulate general for the Philippines in New York, confirmed via Twitter on Sunday that attorney John Albert Laylo was a victim of a “random shooting incident” in Philadelphia a day prior.

A preliminary investigation has revealed that the pair, who were returning home following a trip to the United States, were stopped at a red light when a black car, possibly a Nissan Maxima, drove up behind the Uber and a shooter opened fire. The car then pulled up alongside the Uber and more shots were fired, police said.

Philippine officials on Monday were mourning a government attorney fatally shot in Philadelphia and called for the perpetrator to be brought to justice.

Philippine Consul General Elmer Cato met Laylo’s mother at the hospital and said she was slightly injured by glass fragments during the shooting.

Police say the investigation at this time shows the shooting was random, possibly road-rage related, CBS Philadelphia reported.
